“About Coal fired power plants”
Nevada is proposing to build 4 coal fired power plants which would pollute our air with added particulates and ozone. Our lakes and rivers would be further contaminated with mercury.
The attached letter is UPHE response to the BLM with regard to a proposed large coal fired power plant to be built near Ely , Nevada, about 150 miles from Salt Lake City. UPHE has sent a strong message to Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons, Senator Harry Reid, Representative Heller, the BLM and the Nevada Department of Environmental Protection that Utah citizens don’t want to be downwind of Nevada pollution. Long Term Exposure to Air Pollution and Incidence of Cardiovascular Events in Women NeJM vol 356:p447-458, Feb1,2007
Article looks at pm2.5 exposure in 65,000 post menopausal woman based on nearest air quality monitor. Each increase of 10ug per cu meter was associated with a 24%increase in the risk of cardiovascular event and 76% increase in the risk of death from cardiovascular disease.
