Feb 13, 2013. KUTV: Governor’s Office Says He Leads the Way in Efforts to Clean Up Utah’s Air.

In a very short TV interview it is not possible to tell the whole story and the segments of the interview that survive the editing can lead to confusion.  To clear up any confusion: the specific initiatives the Governor refers to is what the DAQ has come up with to improve our air quality.  But the improvement in air quality has been mandated by the federal government through the Clean Air Act.  In fact years ago, the antipathy towards environmental protection on Utah’s Capitol Hill lead to the legislature passing a law making it virtually impossible for the state to initiate any protection beyond what is mandated by the federal government.

It is rather audacious and disingenuous for the Governor to take credit for these initiatives that would never have come about had the state not been forced to.  But even the DAQ admits these new rules are not enough, and they are still determined to let the big polluters emit even more. Amanda Smith is dead wrong in implying that Rio Tinto and the refineries have figured out magical ways to expand and pollute less.  They may be polluting less per unit of product produced, but in total volume, they are certainly not polluting less.
