Uinta Basin oil railway moving in the wrong direction
Last week the Surface Transportation Board made an unfortunate decision to grant approval for the proposed Uinta Basin rail expansion. The plan comes from the Seven County Infrastructure Coalition, as a way to connect Utah’s extraction industries and increase oil output. This rail expansion perpetuates Utah, and the nation’s, dependence on fossil fuels. Increase in output will lead to increased extraction, which is in complete opposition with the Biden Administration’s pledge to curb greenhouse gas emissions.
A Salt Lake Tribune article on the subject states “While Utah leaders hailed Wednesday’s 61-page decision as a boon to rural economic development, critics challenged the project’s financial viability, calling it a reckless subsidy that perpetuates the nation’s addiction to fossil fuels.”
