Trump’s Rollbacks of Environmental Protections
In the midst of the worst public health crisis in 100 years, the Trump Administration has already tried to roll back nearly 100 different environmental protections. Just lately they:
- Used the pandemic as an excuse to give industrial polluters a free pass to to do whatever they want in emitting dangerous air and water pollution.
- Finalized plans to gut the Clean Water Act allowing more of all different kinds of pollution in our drinking water.
- Rolled back vehicle fuel efficiency standards that would have reduced massive amounts of toxic air and climate pollution from the nation’s cars and trucks, including on the Wasatch Front.
Now they are attacking even the existence of clean air standards themselves. Dirty energy corporations have been trying to undercut the science behind those standards for the last 25 years. They have finally found an Administration willing to do that by putting forward a proposal that would eliminate some of the most important research on public health and air pollution that uses private health information from individuals. In doing so, it is clear that their goal is to basically eliminate the standards in total. We wish we could say that we are surprised, but under this Administration, nothing surprises us anymore. But we are outraged and you should be too.
This proposal is opposed by every major scientific and public health organization in the country and even the EPA’s own scientific advisers.
