Wildlife, Air Quality at Risk as Great Salt Lake Nears Low

The climate crisis and bad public policy are joining forces in causing the lake to continue to shrink to its lowest level in modern history. That exposes more dry lake bed, which becomes an increasing source of dust, laden with toxic heavy metals like arsenic and mercury, every time the wind blows. When the dust lands on our snowpack, it darkens the snow and accelerates the melting of the snowpack, creating a feedback loop that diminishes our water resources even further.

This alarming saga of the Great Salt Lake is yet another reason to oppose the dirty energy inland port, because the port is intended to facilitate more fossil fuel extraction from the state. Activities related to the port itself will place more demands on a shrinking water supply. We’ll keep saying it over and over, “No to the dirty energy inland port!”
