UDOT paving the way for Parley’s mine that hasn’t been approved
Granite Construction’s proposed 634 acre mine is tied up in a legal debate after the Salt Lake County Council passed an ordinance to prevent it. Residents, especially the community of Mt Aire have expressed strong opposition to the mine/gravel pit. Aside from forever altering one of the most beloved local landscapes in the area, the mine is sure to increase dust pollution, and take up precious water resources for its operations during a megadrought and looming Great Salt Lake dust crisis.
The Utah Department of Transportation doesn’t seem to have taken the County’s ordinance change into account when they considered the permit for a frontage road to the proposed mine site.
Why would we approve a road to a mine site that has not been approved? Residents spoke out against the road to Fox13.
“We don’t want to intermix gravel trucks and families transferring vehicles as they go to school and other activities,” president of the Mountair Private Road Company said to Fox13 over the permit. “It’s been devastating because this has been a sanctuary for our family and many families.”
There will be a 30-day comment period after the Division of Air Quality completes their review. We need to voice strong opposition to this mine and alterations to the canyon to accommodate it at every step in the process. It was public pressure that resulted in the City Council ordinance change to prevent the mine but the battle is not over yet. Please stay tuned for information on how to help.
