A win for public lands is a win for public health in Utah

Last weekend, UPHE stood alongside passionate advocates at the Public Lands Rally at the Utah State Capitol to champion the protection of public lands.

Public lands are vital in the fight against climate change, acting as critical carbon sinks and preserving biodiversity. With the state of Utah’s historic prioritization of the fossil fuel industry over the public interest, we can be certain that state control of these lands would result in increased fossil fuel production.

Beyond environmental benefits, they contribute to public health by providing clean air, clean water, and spaces for recreation and mental well-being.

In a significant development, the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear Utah’s challenge against federal public lands ownership, delivering a major blow to the state’s efforts to take control of 18.5 million acres managed by the Bureau of Land Management.

This decision reaffirms the importance of keeping public lands in public hands, ensuring their stewardship for future generations. UPHE applauds this outcome and remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting these lands from privatization and exploitation.
